Looked at a used Legend today with a 1200 Curt Andrews engine. Noticed one of the 12 head bolt locations had no nut/stud in the bole--told by seller that only motorcycles used that hole???
Did this engine have a broken/missing head stud or are there only 11 head struds?
Pls advise.
Thanks

Thanks for the response. I'm hoping that the seller was naive enough to not know he had a broken head stud--but his "story" did not make sense to me.
Missing stud/nut was in the second row from the front (looking at carbs on left) on the carb/intake side.
Is it possible for the stud to break without any loss of power and without an immediate head gasket failure? Engine idled smooth. Only witnessed it running inside of his trailer.

If the engine does not squeek right when it is COLD started then the head gasket (should) be ok for right at this moment.
BUT I would asume that you will be fixing it in an unknown amount of time. If the price is right one could take a risk and asume a worst case situation but hope for the best?

broken stud much better than a stripped out hole. if it is stripped the head and cylinder come of for drilling and helicore... gaskets can run 200 dollars...
or more...
