Steering rack rebuild
« on: January 21, 2009, 10:52:15 am »
How can I tell if my steering rack needs a rebuild? It has some play between the rack and the pinion when you try to rotate it but no play up and down (if you will) at the ends. Thanks Todd

Hi Todd,

You might want to read through this thread first:

There is a rebuild kit available through 600 Racing or Dealers. There is also a shim kit and various other parts available.

From what I was told they dont make the shim kit anymore.  I would really like one for my car.

I don't know who makes the steering rack for 600 Racing. I don't think it would be too hard to come up with shims of some sort that would work.

A sealed steering rack? Haven't heard that one.
Has anyone talked to Little Race Cars or one of the more reputable dealers?

We made some shims from thin sheet metal that helped a lot.  I'm not sure if it is the way it was intended but it sure helped get some play out of the wheel.  I put them between the "cap" with the grease fitting in it and the brass bushing in there.

I thought on here or on the Yahoo board someone mentioned making shims from a cut up soda can.  Does anyone know where I can find an exploded view of the steering rack?

All of the parts needed for the rebuild are available from a local bearing house. I purchase all of the bushings and shims from them also. I have large bushing is stock along with shims. The usual replacement parts needed for the rack are the large bushing and possibly some shims. Most of the time once the bushing is replaced the factory shims are the proper thickness.

What size is the bushing?  I guess I should take mine apart and look at it.  I had planned to make some shims myself but haven't got to it yet.
