Oil filter styles
« on: January 05, 2009, 11:07:25 am »
Want to get some thoughts on different types of oil filters.  The car I bought has a decent sized in-line filter that is in good shape.  I also bought one of the canister type filter adapters that bolts to the frame.  When I got the engine back in the car this weekend, I realized how exposed that canister type filter will be.  With the in line, it sits on top of the engine under the carbs in a pretty safe location.  Is there a benefit to to canister type filter?

I switched from the remote system to the Texas Style adapter that 600 is now selling.  It helped with oil pressure and the filter is back on the motor so it is out of harms way too.

I use the adapter on the back of the motor where the stock filter goes to use a spin on automotive filter.  I believe thats what RickyBobby was saying as well.  It keeps the filter out of harms way and cuts down on lines and fittings, a must if you race on dirt.

600 doesn't have it on their site yet.  It is $45 and well worth it.  It gets rid of the lines, the weight, and keeps more oil pressure in the motor.  It was a win, win for me.  It looks simular to the adapter used for the remote system on the back of the motor but allows a regular spin on filter to work.

Is it still easy to get to the filter on the back of the motor?

Yep, the filter is easily accessable from under the car.  It goes on teh same place that the stock Yamaha filter goes.

It does but becuase it is a different thread you need to change the oil filter you use.  I was running a WIX 51515 on the remote system and switched to the WIX 51626 for the new system.

I use the Oberg screen type filter. They are small enough to mount just about anywhere on the car. They are a bit pricey for initial purchase, but no costs for replacing canisters. Also, you can check the screen for any debris without the mess of having to cut open your filter canister.

The oil cooler is plummed off the fittings coming out of the oil pan on the left side.  The front fitting is the pressure line and the rear is the return, just like they use on teh stock bike.
