Springs???
« on: June 03, 2007, 08:59:24 pm »
Can someone explain to me how softening or stiffening each of the 4 springs will affect the handling?  I'm not looking for anyones set up, just trying to learn how to adjust and tune my own car.  I assume each of the 4 corners will act differently to softer or stiffer springs.

Thanks!

From http://charlesking.net/Legends-Cars.html

Cross Weight/Wedge
Cross weight is the combined weight of the left rear corner and the right front corner as a percentage of the total vehicle weight. More cross weight results in a tight race car, less cross weight results in a loose race car. Wedge is the adjustment made to change vehicle cross weight. Adding wedge to the left rear will transfer more weight to the right front corner. Wedge is added or removed by adjusting the springs.

Don't know if this will help, a quick trouble shooting guide from the Dwarf Car Technology book.

Car is loose going into a turn:
Item                            Adjustment

Stagger                             Decrease
Toe-out                            Not enough
Front springs                 Too soft
Rear springs                   Too stiff
Brake bias                        Too much rear
Suspension bind           Exists in rear suspension
Cross weight                   Increase
Rear roll center             Lower

Car pushes off corner
Item                                   Adjustment

Stagger                                   Increase
Toe out                                   Decease
Front springs                       Too stiff
Rear springs                         too soft
Cross weight                         Use less
Rear roll center                   Raise

Hope this is of some help.

First I want to thank everyone for all the info its a big help.  I guess my only question left is how does the LF spring and LR spring affect the handling.  I got the jist of the right side springs but still am not sure about the left sides.

Thanks again

a heavier LR will tighten the car, a heavier LF will loosen the car

It all has to do with the cross weight transfer that Al explained. How fast, or slow, weight transfers from one corner of the car to the other. You want to keep all 4 tires on the ground.
I have been using Dwarf Car Technology, by Steve Smith, as a reference while I build my car. There are several good books out there on handling and suspension. How To Make Your Car Handle, Race Car Suspension And Geometry are a couple others I have in my library.
It's all pretty mind boggling at times. I guess I should have paid more attention in physics class.  :o

Just my .02 for what it's worth.

 Good Luck
