Broken tap
« on: April 07, 2008, 10:38:05 am »
Solved the cam cap issue and now ran into a new problem.  I broke a tap off in the hole for one of the bolts that holds the chain tensioner in.  It turned in pretty easy until it just snapped.  It was a cheap tap, so it was probably weak.  I tried turning it out with a small punch in one of the flutes, but no luck.  The metal of the tap was too hard to drill into to use one of the bolt remover taps.  Any ideas?

They sell a tool to remove broken taps. Mine came in a set of 4 different sizes. They have 4 tangs that slide down into the flutes on the tap and you work it out. Mine are from cornwall tools. Look on e-bay tap extractor.

I just ordered something like that from MSC Industrial Supply.  I wasn't able to curse the tap out of there, so I guess this is plan B.  Now I just need to figure out what I can do wrong on this motor next.   :-\

John,
Sounds like that might be a good tool to put in the old toolbox!  ;)
Gotta love that positive attitude!!!

They did not have them in metric, so I am giving a 1/4 inch remover a try.  I will let everyone know how this works.  For $14 it is cheaper than going to an engine shop to have it removed.

The tool worked great.  Well worth a few bucks.  It took me longer to open the package than it did to get the tap out.   :) :) :)

Good on you!
I guess I should get a couple of those for the tool box.
Mine seem to have grown legs and walked away.  ???

I know what you mean.  I went to use my feeler gauges the other day...  Yep.  Gone to I don't know where.  Off to the store I go again!
If it isn't fun, why are you doing it?
