Noise with engine running
« on: May 31, 2017, 03:04:56 pm »
I am new to Legends and my son and I each have a car. One makes a noise when running like the starter is engaged. Is it possible to remove the starter with the engine running? I have had a stethoscope on the starter with it running and cannot hear any odd noises and have removed the alternator and started it with no change. This noise has had no effect on the engine performance, I just want to confirm what the cause of the noise is before I find out the hard way.
Thanks In advance,
Mike

Mike,
Sorry for the slow response. I thought someone more engine savvy would jump in.
I do not think you can remove the starter with the engine running. I believe the starter gear stays engaged to the ring gear.

I would pull the starter motor and check it.

Sorry I am not much help!

Maybe swap the starters between cars and see if the noise follows?

The starter is always engaged, that's why when you spin the car, you need to get the clutch pushed in ASAP

Mike,

When the starter chain stretches they make noise. You may also want to check the valves and make sure you don't have a real loose valve. Also, check for exhaust leak it could be something as simple as the header pipe didn't crush or missed the exhaust gasket in the head.
