Safety Wire Plier Use For New Legends Racers
« on: January 25, 2015, 05:39:29 am »
Now that they have the new oil filter safety wire and clamp rule, here is a link on how to use a safety wire pliers for those of you that have never used one.
You might as well order one since you will need them now.
Those of us that have been around racing in other divisions like Sprint Cars, already have them in our tool boxes...

PS...
It would be a good idea to order some safety wire also... have fun getting at the side of oil filter with these babys !!

A lot of people do not know how to properly safety wire nuts, bolts, hose clamps, etc....
I am off work tomorrow and will try to post some  info for everyone.

Here is a simple "how to" on safety wiring bolts:

Here is another specific to safety wiring hose clamps:

The only thing to rember, for our purposes, is to make the wire long enough to tie to a tab or hole to hold everything together.

The easiest way to do it since the rule reads "wired around the mount"
1 - Remove the oil filter mount
2 - Wrap some safety wire around the mount near the 90 degree angle where it mounts to the frame
3 - Borrow someone's safety wire pliers and twist a 'braid' into the wire that is around 3 inches long
4 - reinstall the mount to the frame and install the oil hoses
5 - Install the oil filter
6 - Slip the hose clamp over the filter and slide it up the filter lacing the 'bradeed wire' under the hose clamp.
7 - Tighten the clamp, pinching the twisted wire or 'braided wire' as I call it, between the clamp and the oil filter

This way, if you need to change a filter for regular oil filter maintenance, you will not have to re-braid a wire or twist another safety wire around the mount again... just remove the clamp from the 3 inch piece of braided wire.
It will also come in handy if a rock or debris pokes a hole into your filter during a race and you need to pull into the pits and replace a filter real quick
The rule states "around the mount" but does not state "around the clamp"
Another method would be to drill a small hole through the mount on one side while it is removed ( avoiding drilling through an oil passage) for a place to run the safety wire through so you don't have to run a wire around the entire mount or around a hose nipple on the mount
