Starter Wiring
« on: June 26, 2013, 09:55:42 am »
I just noticed that the wire from the solenoid to the starter is only 12 gauge on my car. Seems a bit small to me. References indicate maximum of 60-100 amps for a 12 v system and 12 ga wire.

Does anyone have an opinion that an 8 gauge wire would allow the starter to experience less volt drop, higher crank speed and longer life?   I'm guessing that the amps for starting a very hot or a very cold engine is 150 amps?

An 8 gauge copper starter wire would be fine.

I agree. 8 gauge for starter.
