Steering Rack Help
« on: March 13, 2013, 11:17:55 am »
Are both ends of the steering rack suppose to be the same legnth? I am having a problem with the right front wheel being pointed out way too far and everything else is shortened up as far as they will go.

We have run out of ideas on what else to check before we send the car out to be set up.

Any help is appeciated.

Scott

Assuming by pointed out you mean toe...
Do you have a 12" rod on the right side? Is the rack plate bent?

check to see if your rack is centered, with sterring wheel you should turn to stops same amount right and then left.
once centered lock in place with vice grips then check or adjust front end.

We have 11" rods on both sides......rack plate does not appear to be bent......could have the box skipped a gear inside.....rod comming out of steering box on right side seems to be longer than the the left.

We will have to check on this in the morning.

If you have 11" rods and you are trying to center the box so that the box arm are equal, you will need to run  one side in and the other 11' rod out evenly This will center the box. I  will be in my shop all evening, feel free to call me and we can walk through it to figure out your issue.

Like the others said, yes, you need to center the box before installing the steering wheel, steering shaft, or spindles. Easiest way is to temporarily connect the steering wheel and count the rotations. with the old type box you should have about 540* rotation. That means you should have 270* either side of center. The new type box I believe has a little more rotation available, but the method is the same.  Once you get this right, lock the rack in place, remove the steering shaft, re install it so that your steering wheel is centered, connect your spindle arms, and set toe.

It should be pretty straightforward.
