Installing SFI padding
« on: April 09, 2013, 07:37:26 am »
Hey guys,

I am unable to install a left side shoulder support on my seat so I went ahead an ordered some SFI sheet padding to mount up on the inside of the car next to my left shoulder.

http://www.polyperformance.com/rally/Jaz-SFI-Sheet-Padding-p-3179.html

This is pretty high density stuff. It cuts and shapes pretty well with a hack saw blade and file.  I may actualy double it up to make it act as a shoulder support.

Has anyone used this sort of thing? Im trying to secure it up to the car but the stuff is so smooth the noting wants to stick to it. Originaly I wanted to velcro it to the wall velcro isnt sticking to it, the same goes for double sided tape. Id rather not use glue but if I were to what would I use? Im thinking worst case Id take the panel out of the car and bolt the padding to it.

     Thoughts?

     Thanks,

Eric

Construction adhesive. I dont recall the brand/name, but there is one out there that will hold it in place while it dries. Alot of contractors use it instead of screws for hanging drywall

Thank you Jim, would it be "liquid nails"?

I don't think so. I think liquid nails is too runny. It says on the tube that it can hold on contact but is repositionable for x minutes. Will try to get to the local hardware store tomorrow and let you know

I think the name of the stuff Jim is talking about is Power Grab. They have several different formulas, so be sure the one you buy will work with the padding.

Could you not sew the velcro to the padding?
Easily removeable that way.
Glue will ruin your padding should you have to remove it.
Just asking.  :-\

I did some experiments on a scrap piece the other night, I found that I was able to super glue the velcro to the back of the padding and it sticks very well. I havent installed it on the car yet, probably tonight. What I want to do is now glue anouther piece of the padding over it to create a sort of shoulder support. I have a few things to try at home, still not sure what I want to use.

You found that the superglue works. Cool!
I was talking about sewing the velcro to the padding. You will still have to figure out what works best to attach the other side of it to the bars or roll cage.
