New Engine
« on: January 20, 2013, 07:01:51 pm »
I'm hoping to get a car soon probably roller or one race ready with a open engine. I was wondering
if I get a roller then later on buy an engine, Can I get that engine from a crashed bike or just a cheap
Yamaha FJ 1200 or XJR 1200? What all would have to be done to the engine for it to be competitve and
legal straight out of the bike.  And which in is better to run the FJ 1200 or XJR 1200?

Thanks

I did this this year for my first year. bought a roller then bought 2 motorcycles. The motor we put in are car this past year had 24,623 miles on it we did 22 or so races on it this past year.
A stock 1200 will not pump near 165 from what i was told.
My stock 1200 pumps 145 on 2 cylinders and 140 and 138  on the 3rd and 4th. replace clutch for sure.  This worked out great for me.
i finished 9th in points at riverhead raceway with 2 missed races and 65th in semi pro national and 6th in state semi pro.
Had no trouble running up front with guys in high dollar kyle beattie cars and rpm cars with 1250's at riverhead.
When we went to bigger tracks such as mountain speed way and wall speedway i believe 5/6th's is the size of wall we were at a huge power disadvantage.
If you can find a used 1250 that is the way to go for sure.  Hank Scott said 1200 will never keep up with 1250.
If all you can get is a stock 1200 off a bike it will work well for your first year starting out.
This year we bought new chassis and new 1250 hopeing for much better results.
here is my youtube page all the legend cieos i have on their arr with the 1200 we took off the bike. https://www.youtube.com/user/DRRichie25?feature=mhee
Hope this helps you out with your decision.

Will add towards the end of the season we did start to notice loss of power.
This and me buying a coupe chassis to replace my current bent up we decided to buy new 1250.
We are gong to put the motor back in the bike so my dad can ride around town.

Okay thanks for the help. Well the main tracks I would run at would be
Southern National Motorsports Park and Coastal plains. Both with are
4/10's mile. SNMP is a really high speed track so I guess I can throw the
whole 1200 open motor out the window. The only reason I had planned
on getting a open was money. Its going to cost us $2,500 or so to get
a 1250 rebuilt when we could rebuild the 1200 our self. I'm sure if we
got the 1200 we could get it as good as it could be, (My family use to
drag race and we have friends that own a bike shop building bikes and
engines). What do yall think?

Thanks

The open engine will save you some money if you can do the bulk of the work yourself or have friends/ family that will help you out. You will save money by not having to ship the engine. That would free up some cash to put in your engine.

Okay with that said, Do you think I could run up front
with the 1250's at a track like SNMP with a 1200 - If
we got everything out of the 1200 we could get? Or
would it be best to buy a 1250 considering the money
it would cost to ship it off and get it rebuilt?

Thanks

I would also consider in the rumor of going to a liquid cooled 1250 in the next year or so before buying a 1250 now

Fact is fact. The 1200 pumping under 165 lb compression CAN NOT run with 1250 period! If you go to any major event you will rarely find a 1200 anywhere near the front. As for watercooling the 1250, it is not in any of the near future plans, and any 1250 would be able to be converted to watercooled. The 1200 has not been produced inyears, I would not invest any substantial money in a 1200. My opinion is it wont be too long before they are all sealed.
