Coils and boxes
« on: September 06, 2012, 04:15:39 pm »
Which system is best the red inex box and coils or the black box and coils? And you use the box/coils from a 1200 motor on a 1250? I have a black box and red coils on a 1200 now and have a spare black box and coils which I want to fit to a 1250 motor would it work and what is the best way to go?

Either one works on either motor.
I use black boxes and coils on my cars.
You can have trouble when intermingling them, I think,  but I don't remember which is bad, red box/black coils or the other way around.

I've used both...Had numerous issues with the red box system and repair time at Dynatech was poor at best.  Switched to black box after urging from Jim and have not had a problem since.  Gee...guess I need to listen to Jim more often... ::)

You can use the 3.0ohm Dyna coils with the FJ rectangle black box, but not the XJ square black box.

Or you can use the FJ coils, with the Dyna box.

The FJ coils have pigtail wires coning out whereas the XJ coils have a male spade terminal sticking out for electrical connection.

1= depends on the black box you are referring to. the one with the vac. advance or without?
2=The black box is how old, very old.
3=There were some issues with the red box, but i have not seen to many recent issues, and the are readilly available

My black boxes are rectangle shaped, the one I know had a vac with it the other I'm not sure, I currently run the vac box with red coils on a 1200 but this ok to use on a 1250 also? I can get the red boxes from my dealer here in the uk but I'm not sure about repair, I suppose they would have to be sent back to the US

Yes, if the ignition works on your 1200 it will work on the 1250. Yes i can see if your are out of the States it may change your choices of black or red. the red box is a good up to date unit. the black with the vac. has a 10,500 or so limiter, the black box w/o the vac. is about 9500 or so.
