cure for high oil temps?
« on: August 26, 2012, 11:15:08 pm »
what oil cooler/oiling system(filter/plumbing) is best for lower oil temps? im running 34 coupe,1250 sealed, 70-85 degree air temp,on paved 1/4 mi flat track, synth oil(10-30) and the big square cooler plumbed thru the pan fittings. spin on filter on back of eng. oil gauge after 25 lap main is pegged. doesnt seem quite right to me.

Setrab and Fluidyne seem to be the norm for coolers.
Lots to be said for the top end oilers also.

Big square oil cooler blocks all of the air coming in through the grill.
It's an air cooled engine
Setrab 920 is the way to go in my, and Setrab's, opinion

i also have a VMS top end oiler. so would you plumb the 920 thru the pan fittings like my current set up or would plumbing it thru the filter side get better results? or does it not matter?

There has been alot said on the subject, my system is similar to Hanks. (cheaper)
Fluidyne cooler, 2 pass-    $250.00
Remote filter adpater -      $125.00
Fan                                 -      $  75.00
Remote puck                        $110.00
Lightweight kevlar lines
and alu. fittings                   $175.00

Yes it is pricey to plumb a car, but the motor is $5000.00 +

I plumb it  through the filter side.
I do not run a secondary cooler from the pan, just a loop.

From the rear puck pressure out to the three port oil filter mount. Two ports for pressure in and one port for pressure out, second pressure in comes from the pan.,Pressure out goes through the cooler and back to the rear puck on the motor. I am now using a Russell 651480 tubular trans cooler for the top end cooler. When you use a Fluidyne oil cooler and mount the Russell  tubular cooler as the head cooler it really ccols the oil temps down, pressure is good and the remote filter makes changing the oil a breeze. i weld tabs to the left side motor mount and thats where the filter goes, this is tucked under the exhaust, easy to change filter and protected from damage.

Dennis,  So where exactly did you mount the Russell 651480 tubular trans cooler without disrupting air flow to the engine?

Being a heat sink, it wouldnt need the air flow of a traditional cooler, could mount behind the primary cooler?

I still don't agree with the big oil cooler blocking air flow to/around the motor, it is an air cooled motor, with oil cooler assistance... but there are alot of people who have been doing it for longer than I have, with good results, Dennis included.

My big cooler is mounted low and to the right. Only really blocks air to the clutch cover area.

Ya with the flidyne cooler being thin, we mount it fairly low and the Russell at the bottom and in front of it, I will try to post a picture. The Setrab is a great cooler its just so thick and brittle. I use the Fluidyne because it cools well and takes abuse well.  I totally agree some of these coolers are giant and way to tall, mounted high blocking air flow.. I am sure the type of cooler and mounting location varies from asphalt to doirt also.
