Oil Leak at/near Timing Plate
« on: July 31, 2012, 02:55:35 pm »
I've got a pretty oil good leak that seems to be coming from the timing plate area on the back of the engine.  This engine was just rebuilt at USLC and has 2 races on it.  Its always leaked a little from this area, even before the rebuild. My spare engine also leaks oil from this area, but not as bad as the engine I have installed now.

Anyone have any tips on what's causing the leak and what I can do to stop it?

Thanks,
MT

Do you have anything in the port above the timing plate?
I've had a leak from a bad o-ring in the port plug before

There's an oil port below the timing plate, if that's what your talking about. The leak is not originating from there.

I took the blue plate off my engine and the leak is coming from the crankshaft seal.  Anybody know the method used to change that seal

Carefully pry it out and install a new one.

I have had to replace a few of those seals. It isn't easy with the motor in the car and it helps if you take the brake pedal out. The factory seal has a lip on it so I drill a small hole in the seal and use a dent puller to get it out. The new one goes in fairly easy and I use a long flat punch and hammer to seat it. I have not been able to find a way to get a seal installation sleeve on it with the steering shaft in the way so you just have carefully seat it.
