Pinned cam
« on: July 16, 2012, 11:03:59 pm »
How important is it to have a pinned intake cam?  Will one that is not pinned last 5 races?

It should if it is not already damaged.
None of my cams are pinned, never had one break

No answer for that one from me, I don't pin mine.
Any other engine builders?

I am thinking most machine shops could do them.

A guy on the eastern shore of Maryland can pin them. Send me a PM and I will get you his number.

Hope I'm not asking a dumb question, but what is "Pinning"?

Drilling a hole in it and putting in a "pin". Is supposed to make it stronger.
I've never had problems with un pinned cams, but maybe they do an asphalt where the engines take more abuse

my guess is 90% of Legend cars have the intake cam pinned. It does 2 things.

1. it makes the cam stronger and less prone to breakage.
2. If it does break, it keeps the cam together better and typically causes much less damage.

Call Hank Scott, and he will get you taken care of.

I am kind of suprised here. It was asked what "pinning" actually was and no-one answered. I have seen pinned cams and unpinned cams but have not seen any difference in reliability.
Can someone explain the technical process of just what is done to the cam when they weld what looks to be a set screw in the ends?
Is that to just prevent the end of the cam from cracking?
Does the cam have less failures from the plug popping out causing an oiling issue?

Tech info-please!

Compared to what looks like a small freeze plug stuck in the end.
