Adjusting Steering Rack
« on: June 05, 2012, 05:42:34 pm »
Mid last year I lost the nut and “big screw thingy” on the top of what was a new steering rack.  I have subsequently obtained a new nut and “big srew thingy” but now do not know how to properly adjust the steering with it.

I know that the tighter I tighten the “big screw thingy” the tighter the steering gets but I don’t know if there is a good procedure for making these adjustments?  I keep over tightening it making steering difficult or over loosening it making the steering sloppy.   I’m struggling with getting it just right.

Anybody got any adjustment procedures they want to share?

Thanks!

All I do is tighten it some check the steering how it feels left then back to the right. I do it with the car on the ground.

I would guess that I have to agree with DJ. Adjust it until it feels right for you. If it ends up to be too tight, you will have to prematurely replace parts. My thinking is to stay a bit on the loose side.

Thanks guys.  I just kept adjusting it back and forth until it felt pretty good.
