Oil Accumulator
« on: June 01, 2012, 10:09:12 pm »
Has anyone ever tried or looked into using an Oil Accumulator?  They make them for motorcycles and racing applications.

Oil Accumulators act as a pressurized oil canister that pressurizes naturally when the engine is running against an air cylinder.  Then when there is a loss of oil pressure the pressurized air cylinder pushes the oil back into the engine thus reducing/eliminating an oil starved engine.  According to the literature the racing application can fill and dispense oil almost instantly.  It also holds at least an extra quart of oil that should increase the thermal mass of the oiling system thus helping keep the engine cooler.

The concept then is that as you go down the straights you are charging the system and when you go into a corner if you loose oil pressure it keeps the pressure up.  And for $200 it seems like it would be a fantastic investment.

I have seen an article in Stock car racing magazine (no longer in print) that said it worked great in one of their test cars.  It's a good read.

Tell me what you think, I am looking at getting one of these to try out soon!

I'd email Scott Reinhardt before you buy anything so he can tell you "no"

Gerad,

I think they are a cool deal! I was going to buy one for one of my other projects (still might). Ultimately it will come down to what the powers that be allow.

Never mind.....
Scott Reindhart emailed me back and said that they are not allowed.......
Argh
Frustrating when it's something that in now way will make you faster (actually due to weight could slow you down) but may help save you money in the long run.  But as I choose to run a spec series I choose this life of un-understandable denial.
