Squeaking noise coming from engine????
« on: May 27, 2012, 07:42:10 pm »
1250 sealed motor with 15 races since new. When i start the car from completely cold it squeaks while cranking and for about 5 seconds then goes away. If I shut if off and re-fire it the squeaking isnt there. Is this a head gasket????

Sounds like an oiling issue to me.
Weak oil pressure?
Oil not coating parts while it sits idle?
Get my drift?

That my friend is the start of a headgasket issue. I had one that would squeak at startup and proceed to do so for about 20-30 seconds then go away, it ran fine and raced well plus it would be ok when warm. But the problem got worse and it eventually had to be replaced. It did it again and the head had to be surfaced, then it was all ok. That was an open motor though.
You could try to retorque the head but I doubt it will help.

Sweet, Thats what I figured. So thats gonna have to go back to 600. Sealed motors have their disadvantages.

Yeah, unfortunately a sealed engine will have to go back to USLCI (no longer 600 racing).
It can be a disadvantage... Or it could be cheaper than buying a brand new engine.
Many a member has had to make that decision.  ;)

So I retorqued the head bolts (at 30 ft. lbs.) and all of the exhaust side bolts were loose. It doesnt squeak anymore. Hope that fixes the problem.

Will probably work for a couple races, then try again if it starts squeaking. May even get you through the season before you have to send it out

Is it ok to back them off and re-torque at 25ft lbs or just leave it at 30. I highly doubt that the studs on the exhaust side were at 25 lbs. Much less judging by how far they turned to get them to 30.
