Transponder: Wired vs Rechargeable
« on: February 22, 2012, 03:25:41 pm »
I was just wondering what everyone's opinion is between a hard wired transponder and a rechargeable one.

I have a wired one because I got it a lot cheaper than the rechargable one and it's one less thing to charge and pack before a meeting. Im only ever going to be racing one car so there was no advantage of having the non wired.

I had a hard wired one, and it was causing intermittant electrical issues with the fuel pump. Wrecked half a season chasing it down, never found the problem until the transponder finally failed. The hardwired ones were not meant for our type of cars, they cannot handle the alternator/generator output.
I would recommend wireless

I would go with the wireless one too. My hardwired one died after 20 races.

Ethan's hardwired transponder is still working fine though.

It all depends on the brand of transponder...

I have been using my four hardwired AMB transponders for over ten year ans I have never had a problem.

They have been trough rain, mud, big puddles and 100* days with flawless operation.

I chose the hardwire because I hook it in the fuel pump circuit and forget about it. I do not have to remember to turn it on or charge it...

I can't comment on AMB, as we use Westhold here, and I was told by Westhold that the hardwired transponder was not made to be used on cars with alternators. They have changed them a few times since all of the problems were happening, but I'm not going back to a hardwired unit

The AMB wired one work awseome never had any charging or electrical . AMB makes the best transponders IMO.
