setting bumpsteer without gauge....
« on: May 11, 2011, 11:22:16 am »
i was reading about bumpsteer and it's affects, and how to measure with the gauge...

But I got to wondering, they are talking about matching the steering arm angle with the lower A arm to achieve close to zero bump.  If I put my digital angle on the lower a arm, and matched that angle on the steering arm, wouldn't that give me close to no bump, close as possible without the gauge?

Basically bump steer is the change in toe as your tie rod angle/length changes due to suspension travel. I dont know of a way to get zero bump without measuring it. Longacre Products makes a good gauge to measure bump steer.

After you are all done setting your car up and scaling it you want to set Bump. This is how I was taught to do it:

1- Measure your upper a-arm angle
2- Set car on blocks so its at ride height
3- Remove Shock/Spring & Tire
4- Use jack to raise suspension until your upper a-arm angle is correct
5- Set up gauge and measure
6- Use shims to adjust and remeasure
7- Do other side
8- Recheck Toe
