Top speed
« on: October 22, 2010, 06:01:14 pm »
Hello I just bought a legends car and have plans to road and oval race it. While I am new to legends cars I am not new to racing. I am trying to figure out if I should use a 2.92 or 2.50 gear for road racing. One of the tracks I race at the most is very fast and I am hitting around 110 mph in a spec miata (stock motor). I am worried that with a 2.92 gear I will be close to running out of gear at the end of the straight. I think top speed for a 2.92 gear is around 120mph. With the aerodynamic drag on these cars what is the actual top speed that they are capable of?  I know with a 2.50 gear the blacks racing chart says the top speed is 140 mph I think the aerodynamic drag on these cars might make 140 mph impossible. So will I run out of gear with a 2.92?  I know a legends should be much faster than my miata was.  Thanks for the help.

You can run either gear. The engine power and areo drag will not allow the car to use all of either one. The 2.92 & 2.50 are the same ratio with the 2.92 in 5th and the 2.50 in 4th.

Sometimes it is nice to drop into 5th with the 2.50 to slow the motor down and not twist it so tight all of the time.

It will come down to your preference in the end. Most people like the 2.92 as they need the help getting themselves off of the corners.
