When the piston is in the motor the arrow on the bottom of the pictured piston would be pointed at the front of the motor (exhaust side). If you look close at the top valve cuts you will see two dents one on each end of the semicircles that is where the intake valves hit.

That happened when the timing chain broke.  The cam was no longer timed properly so some of the valves were open when they were supposed to be shut.  Those valves got bent, and obviously they messed up the pistons.
